Promotion of Millets in Tribal districts of Odisha

The tribal district of Odisha possess a rich cultural heritage and are a home ot indigenous communities. However, these regions often face challenges related to nutrition and food security. One promising solution lies in promoting the cultivation and consumption of millets. Millets are highly nutritious, climate resilient and culturally significant crops that can play a pivotal role in transforming the health and well-being of tribal communities. There are numerous benefits of millets and its promotion results in enhancing nutritional security, climate resilience and sustainable farming, preservation of cultural heritage, Economic empowerment and food sovereignty, Environmental conservation.

SVA has been promoting Millet cultivation in Sinapali and Narla blocks of Nuapada and Kalahandi districts respectively, with assistance of the state government..However since its inception, SVA has been working for conservation of millets and other traditional nutritious crops of the region.

Our Activities

  • Training and Capacity building programs to educate farmers about the benefits of millet cultivation, sustainable farming practices, seed selection, soil management, water conservation techniques, line sowing, pest and disease management, etc.
  • Awareness Rath/campaigns to educate the communities about the nutritional benefits and cultural significance of millets.
  • Ensure availability of high-quality millet seeds at affordable prices. Establishment of seed banks/centers at the village level to facilitate access to diverse millet seeds and promote seeds saving practices.
  • Financial Support and Incentives: Provide financial assistance and incentives to farmers to encourage millet cultivation. This includes subsidies for seeds, farm equipment, organic inputs, and irrigation systems,
  • Introduce government schemes and programs that specifically target millet cultivation such as providing low interest loans, insurance coverage and grants for millets based enterprises
  • Market linkages and value addition through FPO: Faciltate market linkages for millet farmers by establishing direct procurement systems, connecting them with Udanti FPO and MPCL FPO for local market linkages.

Impact

  • SVA promoted OPCL outlet in Bilenjore has been selling Ragi powder since 2010-11. SVA has also set up millet grinding units at Bilenjore (Nuapada) and Balipada (Kalahandi) to provide services to local communities.
  • Promotion of MPCL FPO and Udanti FPO in Kalahandi and Nuapada districts respectively for market linkage of the Millets procured in the project villages.
  • 2000 Farmers directly benefited
  • More than 10,000 quintals of Ragi procured
